Within the iPhone are some very clever sensors that take the whole experience of using a portable, hand held device onto a whole new level!
Firstly there is the accelerometer which can tell which way around you are holding the iPhone. If you are holding the iPhone vertically then the accelerometer will make the iPhone show content in the portrait format but if you turn the iPhone so that it is held horizontally it will automatically switch the content into landscape mode. This ensures that the content is always the right way up and also makes sure that you are viewing the content in the best possible way. So to watch a movie or video in widescreen all you have to do is hold the iPhone horizontally and the iPhone takes care of the rest, no need to change any settings!
Then there is the proximity sensor which detects when you lift the iPhone to your face to make a mobile phone call. It uses this information to turn off the screen saving battery power and it also shuts off all of the controls so that you cannot inadvertently press any options on the screen while talking.
And finally the iPhone has a very clever ambient light sensor which detects the amount of light in your current environment and adjusts the screen's brightness accordingly. This means that you will always get the best performance from your screen and you will also be saving battery power as the screen will not be using power that it does not need.
